Create The Hottest Fall Fashion-
Embellished Jeans and Jackets

One of the hottest fashions out there now is embellished jeans and jackets. With many price tags being as high as $200 and above, create your own and save a bundle. Not only can you recycle your old jeans (actually the older the better), you can save money and have the perfect fit. The following are some of my tips on making the perfect pair of jeans.

Supply List

  • Crystal flat back rhinestones, your choice of color and size
  • Where to find them? For the best price and selection, skip the traditional craft stores, and go to D&I. This store is a great find for rhinestones; as well as unusual beads-It is definitely worth the drive where ever you live in the valley!

  • Rhinestone chain
  • buttons
  • cording, trim or fabric
  • Aileene’s “Ok To Wash It” glue, found at any craft store
  • a crayon
  • a wooden skewer or toothpick
  • needle and thread

To add rhinestones to fabric, place a small drop of glue on your jeans. Using the tip of a crayon, pick up rhinestones and place into the glue. Do not worry if the glue builds up around the stone. This will secure stone in place, and remember it really does dry clear! Let dry for 4 to 6 hours. It will take 10 days for the glue to cure, after that your garment can be washed. This glue works quite well, however you still need to take care when washing. Always wash garment inside out in the delicate cycle, or by hand. Never dry-clean. Rhinestone chain, buttons and beads can also be added in this manner. If you choose to add ribbon in this way, test the glue on the ribbon first to make sure you cannot see it when it dries. Even though the glue dries clear, sometimes you can detect it when using these items. Sheer fabric and trims are best sewn on.

To sew a design on by machine, simply open up the inseam of your pants, and lay flat. Pin trim or cording in place, then sew with a zigzag stitch. You can create swirls, random patterns or even leaves with cord. When finished, sew seam back up, following the original stitching lines. Add rhinestones or buttons if desired.

Hand sew on buttons, sequins and beads for interesting effects.

Many interesting iron-on appliqués are now available. Check your favorite fabric store for patterns. Follow instructions on packaging. You can also you the fabric glue to adhere.

Fabric markers work great. They go on with the ease of a magic marker, and wear well. Create ”faux fabric” inserts on jackets. Add vinning flowers, or swirls down the leg of your jeans. Complete this look by adding rhinestones.
