Turn Styrofoam Into A Work Of Art

Turning Styrofoam into works of art is easier than you think. These lightweight accessories can be customized to become an elegant addition to any décor.

Step 1: Prepare the form by cutting and assembling pieces. I started with a 6"x9" piece of Styrofoam, and then added stripes by making strips of foam. You can create any shape you like, by scoring the foam with a sharp pencil and then cutting with a serrated knife. Glue pieces together with Tacky Glue and let dry.
Step 2: Use spackling paste (found at any home improvement store) to add texture. Be sure to push paste into pores of the foam. Add texture by pouncing your knife or paintbrush, then lightly smooth over. Let dry and sand lightly to the desired texture.
Step 3: Time for fun! Add wood embellishments, tile, buttons - anything with texture. Attach with Tacky Glue and let dry.
Step 4: Add cracks if desired with a serrated knife. Twist and turn the knife making sure the cracks are irregular.
Step 5: Time to base coat in any color you choose. Make sure to use water-based paint.
Step 6: Paint detail colors. You may use crackle paint (follow manufacturer’s instructions) or even gold or silver leaf. Add lettering or decoupage if desired. Let dry.
Step 7: Now it’s time to antique your project. Mix equal parts of paint and water to create an antiquing wash. Dark colors (browns or black) make the best color choices. Paint your artwork with this wash, then immediately wipe off. After the antiquing coat dries, follow with a water-based sealer of your choice.
